Did you know that the biggest country in Latin America doesn’t speak Spanish?

This country is Brazil.

Brazil is a massive country that makes up about one half of South America’s land mass and population. Being so large, Brazil is an incredibly diverse country: ethnically, geographically, and culturally. São Paulo is the biggest city in the Americas, and it is also home to the biggest community of Japanese people outside of Japan. Rio de Janeiro, home to the iconic Christ the Redeemer statue and the legendary Copacabana Beach, blew away our expectations as well. For a taste of serenity, Ilha Grande offers a peaceful escape in the Atlantic Ocean just a few hours from Rio de Janeiro.

Before landing in Brazil, we were apprehensive about our safety. I had read time and time again that Brazil can be an extremely dangerous place to visit due to violent crime and gang violence. While every situation may differ, we personally felt no threat and experienced no violence or crime whatsoever. To us, São Paulo feels safer than New York City.
