Did you know that the oldest colony in the world is on an island located in the Caribbean?

Puerto Rico is this island.

Known best for its bioluminescent bay, the old quarter of its capital city, Bacardi rum, and being the home of reggaeton, Puerto Rico is one of the most well-known islands in the entire Caribbean. It is the oldest colony in the world, as it has never gained independence since it was claimed by Spain in 1493.

Nowadays, Puerto Rico is a territory of the United States, and it hasn’t yet gained either statehood or independence. San Juan is the biggest city on the island, and there is where almost all travelers begin their trips. Old San Juan, the historic part of the city, should not be missed. In addition to San Juan, visitors often head to Ponce for its boardwalk, Vieques for its bioluminescent bay, and el Yunque, which is the only tropical rain forest in the United States.
